The Birkin bag of Hermes is the first bag bearing the name of a celebrity. In 1983, Hermes CEO Jean-Louis Dumas was seated next to Jane Birkin on a flight from Paris to London. Birkin placed her straw traveling bag in the overhead compartment, but the contents fell to the deck. She then explained to Dumas that finding a leather weekend bag she liked had been difficult. Dumas then drew sketches on an airplane sick bag and after many drafts, revealed the final design in 1984. As is the case for other Hermes products, the Birkin is handmade by a unique craftsman throughout the whole process. The whole process takes around 20 hours and only highly skilled employees may work on Birkins. The lightning success of the Birkin bag propelled it to the rank of icon of the house Hermes, in the same way as the silk square or the bag Kelly.
